Hedda returns home from her honeymoon with scholar husband and is faced with a lifetime of boredom. Suffocated, betrayed, and struggling with a life devoid of excitement, she looks for ways to fulfil her desires by bringing destruction to those around her, but in the process, also bringing about her own.
Our pop up production of Hedda gabler took place in a flat in Bermondsey, overlooking the London skyline. This production honours the sense of experiment that audiences felt when Ibsen’s plays were first seen in London - when invited audiences would seek them out in special performances for invited guests. These nights were radically intimate, realistic and disturbing. We are used to Ibsen’s classics of realism on the stage but how will the play feel when it is in the room with you? When the fiction is so close?
